Mitotech – mitochondrially addressed antioxidants

mitotech pharma

Mitotech aims to deliver highly active antioxidants into mitochondria for a wide spectrum of age-related therapeutic indications. Mitotech allows the rapid development of break-through pharmaceutical products based on its mitochondrially addressed antioxidant SkQ1. Indeed, SkQ1 is a promising drug candidate for treatment of several age-related disorders. A part of SkQ1, coined “Skulachev ion”, functions as a molecular “tow truck” carrying the other part of the molecule – an extremely active antioxidant plastoquinone – into mitochondria. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results showed that SkQ1 is delivered into the mitochondria in an extremely targeted and efficient manner. The presence of SkQ1 in mitochondrial membrane enables mitochondria to protect itself from reactive oxygen species (ROS) by breaking the chain reaction of lipid destruction. This ability of SkQ1 to protect cells against oxidative stress plays a very important role in treating patients suffering from various age-related disorders (neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular diseases, ophthalmic conditions, etc…).

Mitotech was founded as a spin-off from the bioengineering department of the Moscow State University. The core technology behind Mitotech products is based on the world-renowned work by Professor Skulachev in designing mitochondrially addressed antioxidants. Mitotech Pharma is a biopharma company headquartered in Luxembourg. Its team is a unique fusion of a strong cross-disciplinary scientific group, seasoned clinical drug development professionals and experienced business people. Mitotech’s Management Team includes experts in drug development, financial industry, fundamental biological research and start-up management: Natalia Perekhvatova, Lawrence Friedhoff, Maxim Skulachev and Anton Petrov.
