Generex developed a proprietary technology for drugs delivery into the human body through the oral cavity (with no deposit in the lungs). Generex’s liquid formulations allow drugs typically administered by injection to be absorbed by the lining of the inner mouth using Generex’s proprietary RapidMist device. Furthermore, Generex’s buccal insulin spray product, Generex Oral-lyn, is in Phase III clinical trials at several sites around the world.
Antigen Express is a vaccine formulation for active immunotherapy as well as disease prevention. In contrast to traditional therapies, active immunotherapy amplifies the patients’ ability to fight specific disease rather than targeting the diseased tissue or pathogenic agent directly. This novel technology allows for robust and antigen-specific stimulation of CD4+ T cells, a cell type critical in the recognition of pathogens and modulation of the immune response. The heart of the Antigen Express technology platform is the Ii (invariant chain) protein, regulating antigen presentation by MHC class II molecules and consequent T helper cell activation. Generex advanced a number of product-focused projects toward the clinic based on the modulation of the Ii protein (either suppression of expression of the Ii protein or design of Ii “hybrids” containing both an MHC class II antigenic epitope and a portion of the Ii protein). Antigen Express is applied to the treatment of cancer, infectious diseases, and other serious diseases. The most advanced vaccine so far uses a self-potentiating peptide as an off-the-shelf product for active immunotherapy of prostate and breast cancer.
