The development and manufacture of biological tissues are major socio-economic issues valued at 15 billion dollars in 2014 and is expected to double by 2018. Applications of these tissues concern both the industrial sector (cosmetics and pharmaceuticals) and regenerative medicine. To cope with the limitations of conventional methods of tissue engineering, BioPrinting uses the principles of 3D printing, and so proceeds from the assembly layer-by-layer, of the constituents of the biological tissues (such as cells and the extracellular matrix ) in organizations (patterns) predefined by digital design. Unlike conventional approaches for tissue engineering or Bioprinting by extrusion, Laser-Assisted BioPrinting allows positioning the cells in 3D with a micrometer resolution and unmatched precision. Laser-Assisted Bioprinting is the Bioprinting technology that provides the highest resolution. You can print cell by cell to follow biophysical mechanism. By controlling the physical conditions of ejection (energy, viscosity , …) the volume of the droplets is precisely controlled (~ picolitre ). The patterns of cells are obtained by a quick scan of the cartridge by the laser resulting in the formation of 10 000 droplets per second. Its high definition allows integrating more information, more details in the tissue, which can reproduce the complexity of biological tissues. This information relates to both the microscopic 3D positioning of tissue components (cells, components of the extracellular matrix) and the anticipation of their evolution in time (“the fourth” dimension) up to the emergence of forms and special functions.

Created in September 2014, Poietis was incubated in the Aquitaine Regional Incubator between 2012 and 2014. It values nearly ten years of research on Laser – Assisted Bioprinting technology at INSERM (National Institute for Health and Medical Research) and the University of Bordeaux (France). Management Team is composed by Fabien Guillemot, Bruno Brisson, Bertrand Viellerobe and Delphine Fayol. Poietis won the 2014 I- LAB Award (French Ministry of Research).
